Wedding rings for one and all
Posted Tuesday, January 31, 2006 9:53:52 AM by Kate Grant

Other words for "wedding ring" are "wedding band', a symbol meaning "join together". And what is more symbolic than exchanging rings at a wedding?

Wedding ringsThe simple gold wedding ring is still in demand, but at this day and age, there are many other metals to choose from.

Goldsmiths experiment with titanium, a strong silvery grey colored metal used in aircrafts and space shuttles. Titanium is expected to last almost forever, so here's some more symbolism for you... Along with Titanium, Platinum and white gold wedding rings are also very popular.

Those two metals also star in mens wedding rings, probably because of the silvery color, which is considered more masculine than gold. If you're looking for unique wedding rings, try local artists, but be advised that unusual shapes might be uncomfortable in the long run.

Antique wedding rings are usually an heirloom, passed on from generation to generation, but if there's no such ring in your family, and you like the design, try antique dealers. Irish and Celtic wedding rings are using motifs of old Celtic tribes, popular until today, and even more so. Diamond wedding rings are less popular, maybe because of their high price.

Advising Spitzer
Posted Tuesday, January 02, 2007 3:16:33 PM by Blog57 Team
With Eliot Spitzer sworn in as governor on the first day of 2007, New Yorkers have an array of expectations and demands for the state's new chief executive. Some want to see their taxes go down, while others want better services in the state. And still others think that, with a state senator under indictment, the state comptroller forced to resign and the Senate majority leader under investigation, nothing is more important than cleaning up the mess in Albany. For his part, Spitzer has vowed changes from Day One. But how can he negotiate his way through the competing demands and the labyrinth of state government? Last month the New School's Milano School sponsored a conference on "Governing Change: Policy, Politics and the Spitzer Administration." The following comments from five people in the know, including two former governors, are excerpted from the discussion....

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) _ Don Hancock and his wife Fredericka were in such desperate need of money a few years ago that they sold their wedding rings. But the homeless couple were unexpectedly given new rings during an impromptu ceremony yesterday afternoon. The Hancocks were among about 40 homeless who received gifts donated by employees of Credit Union of America in Wichita. Pastor Don Caitlin of Messiah's Branch church, which hosted the event, says the gift giving has been going on for about five years. All the presents came from Credit Union of America. After they were given out, Caitlin surprised the Hancocks by giving them new wedding rings. Don says the generosity is especially touching because his wife has terminal cancer. ....

Streisand's expletive backfires on her

Two weeks ago, Barbra Streisand, doing a gig somewhere on her tour, did a skit mocking President Bush. Some audience members booed. She asked them to be polite. The booing continued. That's when Babs dropped the F-bomb: "Shut the [bad word] up! Shut up if you can't take a joke!" Everything gets recorded these days and now a New York songwriter with nothing better to do, Lucian Piane, has produced a remix of the line as a disco song of some kind. This guy, who calls himself RevoLucian, told TMZ.com he meant this as a tribute to Babs -- but that if she doesn't like it then she can just, you know, follow her own advice. ....

John Willis picked up wedding rings for himself and longtime love Linda McDaniel late last week. They hadn't set a date, but after 20 years together, it was time. Before the rings were resized, McDaniel was shot and killed. The 46-year-old mother of five will be buried wearing her ring, Willis said. "She was one of the most giving people you'd ever know," he said Tuesday. According to police, McDaniel was shot in the head about 9 p.m. Saturday outside her home in the 800 block of North Montgall Avenue during an ongoing neighborhood dispute. McDaniel was taken to an area hospital and removed from life support Sunday after a test showed no brain activity, Willis said. Willis said the couple had been working on repainting their kitchen shortly before the shooting Saturday....

Wedding day memories 25 years later
Posted Sunday, October 22, 2006 3:13:39 AM by Blog57 Team
Today is my 25th wedding anniversary, and with any luck, I'll be lying on the sun-drenched beaches of the Mediterranean as you read this. However, my luck, being what it is, I'll probably be looking at those beaches through a hotel window spotted with rain. See I'm writing this nine days before my anniversary and the 10-day forecast predicts thundershowers. That's the opposite from the day I got married, that day we had big, puffy, white, almost cartoonish, clouds. I remember it well, as I do most of that, um, interesting day. When I came downstairs the morning of my wedding, it was like stepping onto the set of "GoodFellas." I had no idea the mob bosses had chosen my wedding day and my home to conduct "family business." There were black suits, pinky rings, gold chains and cigarette smoke everywhere....

UK school blasted for double standards over Sikhs' 'kada' and 'chastity ring'

London, Oct 18 : A secondary school in West Sussex has come under fire over racial bias against Christians, after it banned a (Christian) girl student from wearing silver 'purity rings' symbolising a belief of chastity until marriage. The school has been accused of adopting 'double standards', since it allows Muslim pupils to wear headscarves and Sikh pupils bracelets (kada). The Millais School authorities argue that wearing the rings was against its "no-jewellery policy".The ban is the latest in a series of episodes where organisations ban Christian jewellery. Earlier this week British Airways banned an employee from wearing a cross necklace. Rev. John Brown (78), a retired Church of England vicar, argues that the ban should be lifted, as it was 'discriminatory' against Christians. "The ban is totally discriminatory, compared with the way Muslim girls in that school are treated, they are allowed to wear head scarves, symbolising their faith....

Political marriages - hatched or matched

Whether it is a long engagement or wedding of the political kind remains uncertain, but the rapid progress of the talks between the SLFP and UNP has prompted many to think in terms of political nuptials very soon. With President Mahinda Rajapaksa inviting the UNP to join his Cabinet, those who have been talking of an imminent wedding expect their best hopes or worst fears to be confirmed soon. The hopes come from those who support this political marriage and look forward to both the nuptials and the post-nuptial celebrations or the “at home" mood; the fears come from those who see more benefit for the UNP by remaining in opposition longer, with new claims to confirmed bachelorhood in politics, than in sharing the burdens of Government with the UPFA.All are welcome The statement by President Rajapaksa that other parties in Opposition are also welcome to join the Government gives room for consideration whether we are in for more political weddings in the future, or whether there will be lesser events such as proposals, engagements or the exchange of rings without final consummation....
