Columnist abandons fake alias

I have a confession to make to you, my less-than-faithful readers: I have not been honest in the past. Not so much with my column, but more so in person. You see, for years, I have gone to parties with an alias and a back story. Yes, even before "Wedding Crashers," my friend Rob and I used to do this. It spices up one-time-only meetings that most people probably won't even remember the next day. My most-used alias was Lance Sterling. Originally, we were just looking for a pretentious-sounding name for a fake Facebook.com profile I created a while ago, but eventually the persona of Lance Sterling morphed into a slightly over-the-top, yet believable one. It came to pass that Lance Sterling was a professional snowboarder who decided to go back to school after several years competing on the pro circuits....

Laughs are the ultimate f/x

The respected marketing and distribution maven -- and Revolution Studios partner -- should know as well as anyone. His shingle recently laughed its way to the bank with the Wayans brothers' "White Girls" and "Little Man" and the Columbia/Revolution co-production "Click." The bad buzz generated recently by the scuttling of several big-budget projects aside, comedy is still one of the most reliable of film genres because the paradigm for success has always been relatively simple: Have a strong concept, don't spend a lot of money and pack in enough laughs to satisfy the aud. Unlike other genres, comedies don't have to work 100%. "You just have to make sure you don't have a lot of dead space," says Jeff Tremaine, writer-director of the popular "Jackass" movies. "People are very forgiving with comedies," agrees Andrew Panay, partner in Tapestry Films and producer of "Wedding Crashers" and "Employee of the Month." "They just want to laugh a lot, and if you maybe throw in a bit of heart, they leave the theater very satisfied." The concept may be the star, but a byproduct of good comedy has been to create sometimes enduring icons....

Everybody Loves Sacha: Jay Roach has directed some big comedies, including the "Austin Powers" films and "Meet the Parents" and its sequel, but he's never seen anyone quite like Sacha Baron Cohen. Roach produced "Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan," in which the British actor poses as a racist, misogynist TV reporter "interviewing" real people in a cross-country tour of the United States. Cohen stayed in character during filming and has continued to play the part offscreen at press events in Cannes, Toronto, Washington, Los Angeles and London. "I actually think what Sacha is doing is actually pretty new," Roach says by phone from London, where he watched Cohen, as Borat, entertain the crowd at the film's premiere. "Last night I thought people might say, 'OK, snap out of it,' but the opposite is true....

How to make sure kids don't become wedding crashers

Q: How do I get the message across that invitations to my wedding do not include children under 15? Should the invitation read, "No kids"? Should I call the families who usually show up with the entire brood in tow, even when they are not invited? A: It's up to the wedding party to get the word around that children should be left with sitters. Supply the wedding party with the guest list, identify the potential offenders and then make it a point to spread the word early. That might sound like, "I think that Mike and Judy are pretty clear that the reception would be tedious for children, so it's best to leave them at home. That's what we're doing." Be prepared to stand firm should anyone pursue the matter with you directly. I think it's mighty rude when guests ignore an invitation's intent and make their own rules....

The South Forsyth volleyball club is headed for the state playoffs for the first time ever this weekend, partially on the strength of junior setter Natalie Edgeworth's contributions. Edgeworth was one of the team's top performers at the Area 6-AAAAA tournament in Duluth Oct. 14. The War Eagles will be the area's fourth seed with a 27-14 record and face the Pope Greyhounds in the first round of the state tournament Saturday. Beyond the numbers: Opening serve: "I started playing [volleyball] in my seventh-grade year. I was playing gymnastics and I twisted my ankle, so I wasn't allowed to do that anymore. [Volleyball is] fast-moving and it always keeps you on your toes. You never really have to wait around." Heading for state: "I'm really excited. It's the first time our school's made it this far ......

Jennifer Aniston, Vince Vaughn Blame Breakup on Name Calling

MALIBU - It's official. Despite months of speculation, a denial from Jennifer Aniston on Oprah, and a tabloid-suing Vince Vaughn, friends of The Break-Up duo insist that this twosome is irretrievably broke. The cause, it appears, was the usual "he said, she said." Apparently, he said Vaugniston and she said Jennivince until they both called the whole thing off. "They just didn't work as a name," said Team Aniston supporter and the better half of Benifer, actress Jennifer Garner. "It's sad, but what are you gonna do?" "They realized there was no foundation," explained Vince's Wedding Crashers pal and half of O-Kat, Owen Wilson. "Without a catchy hook, how can you catch the love—or the headlines?" Friends close to the pair said the split was painful, both emotionally and grammatically....

Vince Vaughn and Jennifer Aniston are still an item, despite recent reports claiming the 'Wedding Crashers' star had been seen kissing a mystery blonde. Vaughn is threatening to sue several tabloids for making claims he'd ended the relationship with Aniston and been spotted with the woman. The London law firm Schillings, acting for Vaughn, is filing a legal complaint against British newspapers The Sun and Daily Mirror, as well as the New York Post. The attorney Simon Smith is acting for Vaughn who is described in legal papers as the "Hollywood actor, also known for being the partner of Jennifer Aniston". In the documents, the 'Old School' star claims the papers "published allegations that he was caught kissing a mystery blonde whilst attending a charity event on Sunday at London's Old Vic theatre"....
